they have a wide variety of characteristics in various pieces of fiction but they do look close enough to human and maybe he technically is human now but he is still very short
and to answer your question it depends on the medium and world they're from I guess? for example in Dragon Age dwarves and humans can intermarry and reproduce!! I'm not sure about with elves there's been a lot of discussion there but nothing conclusive :/ and with other species too so come to think maybe it's all-inclusive? I know I've read a lot of debate over the lore regarding that subject
but in Lord of the Rings nothing's been said at all but most fans assume the answer is no all around unfortunate for the new romance in The Hobbit movies even if oh uh no spoilers lips are sealed!!!
it's interesting you know in a lot of fantasy narratives there are half-elves and half-orcs and the like but half-dwarves aren't common at all! there's not even a class in Dungeons & Dragons people have to homebrew them if they're interested and oh boy don't think they haven't tried I have to wonder why dwarves get such a short end of the stick too? they can be just as interesting as elves or other races especially if the creator of the mythos delves into them as being something other than really short humans it makes you think doesn't it?
