Hi! This is Ashley. I, um, can't come to the phone- gear right now? Leave me a message and I'll get back to you ASAP, okay? Bye!
*Let me know the time/date of your message!
[text]
you have specific rules you have to follow?
[text]
The one I told him about was about how Haibane aren't allowed to buy things. We can only take second hand what Humans used.
[text]
why? is there a reason?
[text]
We can buy things, too, don't worry! We have these little books that substitute for it, or we can leave a feather instead as exchange. We just can't take anything new like clothes or plates. It all has to be used.
It's a rule that was there since... before I showed up. I still don't know exactly why
[But she'd be lying if she didn't think up a theory or two.]
[text]
[text]
I guess... maybe you'll get a punishment?
[text]
Yes that doesn't sound fun better safe than sorry.
I hope that doesn't get you in trouble here :/
[text]
come to think of it, I did actually have to accept punishment for breaking one of the rules one time already
but it really wasn't that bad!
[text]
what happened?
[text]
Did I ever tell you about the walls we have in Glie? I can't remember, but that's really important.
[text]
No you didn't.
[text]
it's where I live with a bunch of other Haibane.
and he town is really nice! But it's also... surrounded by walls. They're giant, stone walls that go all around the town and the area surrounding it.
And one of the biggest rules is no one's allowed to go through them, or even touch them. only this special group of people called the Toga are allowed. Not Humans, or Haibane.
[Hopefully, Ashley can connect those dots...]
[text]
And you went through the walls
or touched them
Right?
What happened?
[text]
It was fine at first, but apparently I went numb and got a high fever.
I got really sick for a while, and I still had to face my punishment for touching the wall in the first place.
[text]
Jeez
What even was that?
Since you're human now do you think it doesn't apply to you anymore? like you won't get sick if you accidentally buy something??
[text]
at least I think. I don't know for sure, but after the Haibane Renmei
oh, that's the group that helps us, they gave us a place to live and everything.
Anyway, my punishment involved doing some work for the Haibane Renmei for a while. And I think it wasn't that bad.
[...Oh. Huh.]
I don't... think I'll get sick if I do that? I haven't so far.
you mean, if I'm human then I shouldn't have to follow the rules?
oh.
[She appears to have reached an epiphany.]
[text]
That sure makes everything easier right? You don't have to make other people pay for you or anything like that.
[text]
I
I knew but I didn't
!!!!
[text]
[text]
But I guess I feel a little sad too?
And my hands are shaking a little
Ever since I can remember I've been a Haibane
[text] 1/2
[text]
and it's not what you're used to
but from what you've said Haibane and humans are very much alike it sounds like
and it's only while you're here that you're human right?
I mean it's going to be ok
and it's ok to be sad and confused
and all of that
just remember to take deep calming breaths even if you think you don't need to trust me that's a helpful and good thing
[text]
I'm doing the breathing, like you said
I think it's helping
but I had to find a place to sit down
just a little earlier I was so happy
and
You're right it's scary
becoming something different, I mean
[text]
I know
there are a lot of people here who are like that
Something other than human before now I mean
so maybe you can talk to them if it gets really scary again.
Are you doing a little better?
You'll get through it I know you will
[text]
yes I think I am.
I'm just trying to breath now.
I actually met someone who wasn't human either a while ago
two people
so I guess if I really need to I could ask them
[Maybe Karkat's anger had an effect on her that she didn't realize... God she's still shaking, but thankfully, there's no tears.]
